I know this might sound a bit basic to seasoned folks here, but I had to share what just worked for me. I’m in the middle of setting up our new event and email stack, and I was negotiating with a popular landing page and analytics platform.
Their initial quote felt high for our team size. I asked for a discount twice, citing our budget, and they only offered a small, token reduction. So, I finally wrote back, thanked them for their time, and said we’d have to pause our search for now as it was outside our current scope.
I genuinely started looking at alternatives. Three days later, I got a new email from the same sales rep. This time, it was a “special promotion” they’d “just been approved for,” which was 30% lower than their last offer. It matched almost exactly what I’d seen mentioned in an old thread here.
It made me realize that as a buyer, my biggest leverage is my willingness to actually leave the conversation. Before this, I was so focused on justifying my need for a lower price with reasons, when the simple act of walking away was what actually moved the needle.
Has anyone else found this to be true? I’m curious if this works as well during renewal cycles for email marketing or CRM tools, or if it’s more effective during the initial sale.
