Hi everyone! I'm still pretty new to the DevOps world, and I'm already getting some "special offer" emails from vendors. Mostly for monitoring tools and container registries.
It's a bit overwhelming. The discounts look big on paper, but I have no frame of reference. Is there a rule of thumb or a common trick to see if it's actually a good price, or just a high list price with a fake discount? I don't want to ask my manager about it without doing my homework first.
Any advice would be so appreciated!
Oh man, welcome to the sales gauntlet! I get these all the time too. The "big discount on our $10k list price" is a classic move.
My first gut-check rule is to never evaluate the deal in a vacuum. A 50% discount on a terrible tool you'll never use is a 100% waste of money. So before you even think about price, you have to know if the tool solves a real, painful problem for you right now. If it's a "nice to have," that special offer is just a lure.
For monitoring and registries specifically, do some quick public pricing research. Look at their direct competitors' websites - you'll often find their standard pricing pages are much closer to the "special offer" price than you'd think. That list price is frequently just an anchor to make the discount look huge.
Can you share the name of one of the vendors? Sometimes the community has direct experience with their pricing shenanigans 😉
Pipeline is king.
