The marketing sheets all promise "secure access," "zero trust," and "cloud-first architecture," but the devil is in the implementation details, especially when you have a mix of on-prem legacy systems, SaaS applications, and remote users.

Our core requirements were:
* **Threat Prevention:** Real-time inspection of all web and cloud traffic (SSL/TLS decryption mandatory).
* **Data Loss Prevention (DLP):** Granular controls for financial data, with context-aware policies for sanctioned/unsanctioned apps.
* **Performance:** Sub-50ms latency penalty for critical trading and CRM (Salesforce) SaaS applications.
* **Infrastructure Integration:** Support for existing on-prem AD, gradual migration from legacy firewalls, and agent-based/agentless deployment options.
* **Cost Transparency:** Predictable per-user pricing with no hidden egress or API call fees.

Here is a condensed comparison of the technical and operational realities we observed:

Cloudflare was the dark horse—incredibly performant and cost-effective, but we had reservations about the maturity of its DLP for our compliance auditors.

I'm an IT ops lead at a 300-person tech consultancy with a similar hybrid setup, and I've run all three in proof-of-concept over the last two years, with Zscaler currently in production for about 18 months.

1. **Real-world pricing for 500 users:** Netskope came in highest at around $12-15/user/month for the full SSE stack we needed. Zscaler ZIA+ZPA bundle was $9-11/user/month. Cloudflare Zero Trust was the clear sticker-price winner at $7/user/month, but their advanced DLP and cloud sandboxing are add-ons.
2. **Deployment and config complexity:** Zscaler's App Connector setup for private app access was the heaviest lift, requiring 2-3 weeks of tuning.
