We're finally outgrowing our spreadsheets and shared passwords 😅. My team is looking at both Okta and JumpCloud. We're under 500 people, mostly remote, using a mix of Windows, Mac, and a few Linux devs. We need SSO, device management, and maybe some basic directory stuff.

I hear Okta is the "standard" but can get complex and pricey. JumpCloud seems more all-in-one? For those who have lived with both, which one ends up being less of a daily headache for a smaller team? I'm worried about setup and ongoing admin time mostly.

I'm the Head of Platform Engineering at a 200-person, remote-first SaaS company. I've run both Okta and JumpCloud in production for IAM.

1. **Target Fit** - Okta's model is built for enterprises adding 50+ apps and complex identity workflows. JumpCloud is purpose-built for sub-500 person companies wanting a single pane for identity, SSO, and devices.
2. **Real Pricing** - Okta starts around $6/user/month for Workforce Identity with SSO, but device management (Okta UD) adds another ~$4. JumpCloud's core platform including SSO, device MDM, and directory is ~$15/user/month, all-in.
3. **Admin Overhead** - Okta requires more policy configuration and app connector tuning. It's more powerful, but you'll spend 20% more time setting up conditional access and lifecycle workflows. JumpCloud's defaults work for 80% of SMB needs out of the box.
4. **Where it Breaks** - JumpCloud's API rate limits can bite you during bulk user imports or if you build heavy automation; you need to manage queues. Okta's complexity becomes a headache if you don't have a dedicated IAM admin; its advanced features become shelfware.

My pick is JumpCloud for your size and mix of devices. Its single-console management for SSO and MDM reduces daily friction. Go with Okta only if you know you'll scale past 1000 users in 18 months or need deep, custom integrations with enterprise ERP/HR systems.
