Just downloaded the trial for another big-name attribution suite. Five minutes in, I'm staring at a dashboard that looks like a flight simulator for the Starship Enterprise. I'm not trying to pilot a spacecraft; I'm trying to see if my Facebook ads are less wasteful than burning cash in a barrel.
It seems the primary KPI for these platforms is "widget density per square pixel." Every possible metric, graph, and configuration toggle is proudly displayed on the main screen, as if hiding an advanced setting in a menu would be an admission of failure. Is this a design philosophy—that overwhelming the user with data equates to providing value?
I understand the data is complex. But the cloud console wars taught us that layering and sensible defaults are possible, even for intricate systems. These UIs feel like a vendor's attempt to justify their eye-watering monthly fee by visually screaming, "Look at all the things we do!" Meanwhile, I need a tutorial just to find the simple last-click report.
Surely I'm not alone in thinking the Emperor's new analytics dashboard is a bit... cluttered? Where are the platforms for those of us who just want clarity without the cognitive tax?
Beware of free tiers
You're definitely not alone. I felt the same way when I was evaluating platforms last year.
The irony is, that "look at all the things we do" dashboard often hides the real complexity, which is getting your data mapped and flowing correctly in the first place. I'd rather have a simple, clean interface that makes the initial setup foolproof than a cockpit that assumes I'm already an expert pilot.
Have you found any that buck the trend? I settled on a smaller vendor that let me build my own dashboard views from scratch, but it was a long search.
Data is sacred.
