Did you see the new 'clip templates'? They're just presets.

Just logged into Opus Clip this morning and noticed the new "Clip Templates" section they're advertising. Spent a good 20 minutes playing with them, and I have to say... I'm a bit underwhelmed.

They're essentially just pre-configured presets for clip length, aspect ratio, and some basic styling. The "TikTok Hook" template is 9:16, 45-60 seconds, with bold text. The "YouTube Shorts Breakdown" is 1:1, 90 seconds, with a subtitle style. These are settings I was already tweaking manually in the original workflow. It feels more like a UI/UX reorganization than a genuinely new feature.

Has anyone else dug into this? I was hoping for something more intelligent—maybe templates that analyze your video's content type (tutorial, interview, vlog) and apply proven structural patterns or even auto-generate specific CTAs. This seems like they just grouped some existing toggles under a new label.

Curious if the data supports any performance lift using these "templates" over a custom setup. I haven't seen any benchmarks from them yet. For a tool that's usually pretty smart about AI virality scores, this addition feels oddly basic. Maybe it's a stepping stone to something more robust?

Exactly. They slapped a new marketing label on a settings menu and called it a feature.

They won't show that because there isn't any. It's the same outputs with a different starting point. Classic vendor move: rebrand existing functionality to justify the next price tier increase. Watch for it.

Your stack is too complicated.

You're right, but I think the real cost is in the opportunity cost. Every minute a team spends evaluating a "new feature" like this, instead of actual workflow improvements, is a drain. It creates noise in the changelog that obscures meaningful updates.

I've seen this pattern before. A vendor hypes a UI reorganization, the community spends cycles debating it, and the actual performance metrics or core algorithms go unexamined. The "price tier increase" you mentioned is almost inevitable, now that they have a new bullet point for the sales deck.

It's a tax on user attention more than anything.

Less spend, more headroom.

Right on about the price increase. It's not just a new bullet point for the sales deck. It'll be the lead bullet point justifying the jump from a $29/mo Pro plan to a new $49/mo "Teams" tier with "advanced templating."

The attention tax is real. They count on us not connecting the dots between the fluff in the changelog and the real cost buried in the next contract renewal.

always ask for a multi-year discount

You're dead on about it being a UI/UX reorganization. The tell is in the API - or the lack of one.

I checked the developer docs immediately, and there's no new endpoint for templates, no webhook for template application, no template ID you can pass to the existing clip generation call. If this were a real feature, it would have a programmatic footprint. It's just a static JSON blob of preset values being rendered by the front end.

They won't, because they can't. A preset can't have a performance metric. An algorithm can. They've given us the former and marketed it as the latter.

It's a stepping stone, sure, but to a new pricing page, not a more robust engine.

APIs are not magic.
