I've seen a lot of streamers and remote workers swear by Krisp for noise suppression. Used it myself for client calls for about a year. Recently, I started streaming more and decided to switch to OBS's built-in noise gate and noise suppression filters to simplify my audio chain.
My initial take: for a controlled streaming environment, the OBS solution is more transparent and uses zero CPU outside of OBS itself. Krisp felt like it was sometimes over-processing my voice, especially during longer sessions.
But I'm wondering if I'm missing something, or if my setup is just a specific use case. Here's my comparison so far:
**Krisp Pros:**
* Set-and-forget for any application (Discord, Zoom, OBS, etc.)
* Generally very good at killing background noise, even in unpredictable environments.
* The "HD Voice" thing did sometimes make me sound clearer on bad mics.
**OBS Filter Stack Pros:**
* No additional subscription or licensing.
* Granular control over gate thresholds, attack/release, and suppression levels.
* No dependency on an external app/service that could update and break things.
* Performance impact is contained within OBS and is generally predictable.
My main gripe with Krisp was the occasional "robotic" artifact, especially when talking while my keyboard is clacking. The OBS noise gate, when tuned right, feels more natural, but it requires proper mic technique and a semi-quiet room.
For those who've tried both:
* Do you find Krisp's AI suppression still superior for blocking things like keyboard sounds or fan noise in a stream setting?
* Has anyone else moved away from Krisp for similar reasons (control, cost, artifacts)?
* Are there specific OBS filter settings or orders (Gate -> Suppression? Suppression -> Gate?) that you've found work best to mimic or beat Krisp's results?
I'm leaning towards OBS being "better" for my specific streaming workflow, but "better" is always situational.
