Opinion: Fireflies is a good recorder but a weak analyst. Don't buy it for insights.

I've been using Fireflies.ai for about six months now to record and transcribe our team's cloud cost review meetings. Here's my take: it's a fantastic meeting recorder and a decent note-taker, but if you're buying it for the promised "AI insights" and analytics, you'll likely be disappointed. The value just isn't there for the price.

Let me break down my experience with real numbers:

**The Good (Recorder & Transcriber):**
* Accuracy is solid for clear speakers. It captures technical jargon like "Savings Plans" and "RI utilization" surprisingly well.
* The search function is a lifesaver. Finding that one time we discussed a specific EC2 instance family across months of meetings is quick.
* It just works. Reliable recording, easy sharing of snippets.

**The Weak (Analyst & Insights):**
* The "action items" and "key questions" it generates are painfully generic. After a detailed debate on committing to Azure Reserved VM Instances, it suggested: "Follow up on cost-saving measures." Not helpful.
* The "analytics" dashboard feels like a checkbox feature. It tracks talk time and word count, but gives zero insight into the *content* of our discussions. Did we talk more about Kubernetes waste this month? No way to tell.
* For the $19/user/month we pay, I expected it to at least summarize cost-related decisions ("Team decided to implement S3 Intelligent-Tiering for archive data"). Instead, we get a transcript and have to do the analysis ourselves.

In my world of FinOps, the insight is where the savings live. Knowing *who* said *what* about *which project's budget* is the gold. Fireflies just gives you the raw ore.

We've kept it as a glorified recording tool, but we had to build our own simple dashboard outside of it to track actual decisions and savings follow-ups. I wouldn't recommend it to a team whose primary need is deriving actionable insights from meetings. There are better (and cheaper) pure recorders out there if that's all you need.

Has anyone else found a way to make the analysis features actually useful, or are you in the same boat?

You nailed it. I've seen the same pattern with these tools - they're great data collectors but fail the analyst test. The generic action items aren't just unhelpful, they're a compliance trap. If an auditor ever asks for proof of follow-up on a "cost-saving measure," that generated note is worthless.

You mentioned it tracking talk time. I had a client whose leadership thought a high "word count" in a security review meant a thorough discussion. The AI flagged it as "engaged." In reality, they were just arguing in circles about an outdated framework for 40 minutes. The tool measured volume, not value.
