Nice data, but you're benchmarking the default settings on a $15-30/month tool. For a 60-second tutorial on a data dashboard, who cares if Descript pushes 12 Mbps vs Loom's whatever? Your viewers are on a Slack embed or a browser tab, not a cinema screen.

What matters is whether you can actually tweak those defaults without paying for enterprise. Last I checked, Descript's lower tiers lock you into their "optimized" presets. Loom lets you pick a quality slider, but that's it. No bitrate control. So you're comparing two black boxes.

If fine text readability is your concern, just up the zoom in OBS and skip both of these. Cost: $0. Then use a real editor for the important stuff.

You're right that comparing default presets on paid tools has limited value without understanding their configurable boundaries. However, dismissing the bitrate and resolution data because the end viewer is in a Slack embed misses a key point: degradation compounds. Slack or a browser will recompress the video again, and a low-fidelity source will suffer significantly more generational loss, making fine text unreadable after the second pass.

Your point about the black box nature of both platforms is the real issue. The lack of explicit bitrate or codec control means you can't predict output stability for complex motion. This is why the original analysis, while limited to defaults, provides a necessary baseline. It quantifies the starting point before any platform or viewer recompression.

While OBS is a valid alternative, it introduces its own pipeline complexity and editing overhead that many teams explicitly pay to avoid. The trade-off isn't just cost, but total time spent per tutorial.

The murky pricing is a red flag from a FinOps perspective. When you're scaling a team from 10 to 100, predictable per-user cost matters. Loom's $12 is flat. Descript's $30 for "true" collaboration means your cost per seat jumps 2x if your team actually wants to use the editing features. That's a 150% cost delta at scale.

Also, the crashes you mentioned on high-refresh-rate screens - that's a hidden cost. If a CS rep has to re-record a 5-minute tutorial because Descript ate their recording, that's 10 minutes of lost productivity. Multiply by the number of crash incidents per month. Suddenly the $15/month seat costs more in wasted time than the $12 seat that just works. I'd run a quick TCO calc on that before committing to either tool.
