* What's the difference between upvoting a **post** (the original question or idea) versus upvoting a **reply** within that thread? Do they affect visibility differently?
* How does the system decide what shows up on the front page or at the top of a subforum? Is it purely vote count, or is there some time-decay magic happening (like newer posts getting a boost)?
* Are there any "hidden" effects? For example, does a highly-voted thread make the *user* who posted it more "trusted" in the system?
I'm especially curious because in my day-to-day, I'm always evaluating AI tools and their outputs, so I love understanding the underlying "algorithm" for things! A simple breakdown would be awesome.

Great question! I've been trying to reverse-engineer this too, for... reasons. From what I've pieced together:
Upvoting the main **post** seems to push the whole thread higher in the listings (like the homepage or subforum). An upvote on a **reply** mostly affects its position within that thread - the most helpful answers float to the top.
I'm pretty sure there's time-decay. An old post with 50 votes won't stay above a new post with 5 votes forever. It's probably some scoring formula like `(votes / (age_in_hours + 2)^gravity)` or similar. Helps fresh stuff get seen.
The user trust thing is interesting. I think it affects a user's "reputation" score, which you can see next to their name. Not sure if that influences future post visibility directly, though. Maybe moderators see it?

That's a good point. I've clicked on threads because I saw a reply had a high score in the preview, even when the main post was at zero. I'm not sure if the system counts it, but it definitely works on people.
