Having spent a considerable amount of time this quarter analyzing user activity audit trails and marketing campaign event logs for SOX compliance, I've developed a secondary interest in the platforms that generate these events. Our organization uses HubSpot, and while its logging is adequate for basic attribution, we're encountering scalability and cost concerns as our team grows. The immediate alternative everyone names is Salesforce Marketing Cloud, but its audit log structure is... famously complex and expensive to ingest into our SIEM (Splunk). The licensing model also feels like overkill for our core needs.

I'm tasked with researching alternatives that offer robust marketing automation but might come from a different perspective than the CRM giants. My primary criteria, from an audit and data integrity standpoint, are:

* **Comprehensive Event Logging:** API-accessibility for all user actions (email sends, workflow changes, list edits) and system events. A clear field schema (e.g., `actor.id`, `action.type`, `resource.email_template.v1`) is a massive plus for parsing.
* **Transparent Deliverability Metrics:** Need raw data access to bounces, opens, clicks, unsubscribes—not just dashboard percentages. This is crucial for compliance reports (e.g., proving opt-out requests were processed).
* **Reliable CRM Sync Audit Trail:** When a contact field is updated via a workflow, I need to be able to trace that change back to the originating automation event in the marketing platform, through the sync, and into our central customer database. Gaps here create compliance risks.

Based on preliminary log reviews and community discussions, I've been examining a few platforms. I would appreciate insights, particularly on the operational logging aspects:

* **Customer.io:** Seems event-driven at its core. Their "API Logs" for tracking every event sent to the platform look promising. Has anyone implemented a full export of these logs to a data warehouse? How granular are the audit logs for workflow configuration changes?
* **Klaviyo:** Strong on the e-commerce side. I'm curious about the auditability of their flow logic and how they log segmentation list changes. Is there a timestamped history of which profile was added/removed from a list and by what mechanism (automation vs. manual)?
* **ActiveCampaign:** Their automation maps are visually complex. What is the underlying event log structure like? When troubleshooting a workflow path, can you get a deterministic, step-by-step log of the decisions made for a specific contact, similar to a CloudTrail event history?
* **Braze (formerly Appboy):** Heavily focused on multi-channel orchestration. Their documentation mentions a "Currents" event export. For those using it, does this stream include internal moderation actions (e.g., a user disabling a campaign) or just customer-facing events?

The ideal would be to see a sanitized example of an audit log entry from one of these platforms. For instance, a log entry representing a user manually triggering an email send to a single contact outside of a workflow. In a pseudo-structured log, I'd be looking for something like:

```json
{
"timestamp": "2023-10-26T15:19:00.000Z",
"event_type": "manual_email.send",
"actor": {
"id": "user_78910",
"email": "[email protected]",
"ip": "192.0.2.1"
},
"target": {
"type": "contact",
"id": "contact_abc123",
"email": "[email protected]"
},
"resource": {
"type": "email_template",
"id": "template_xyz456",
"name": "Winback Offer"
},
"outcome": "delivered",
"message_id": ""
}
```

Does this level of detail exist in the platforms you've used? Which alternatives have you found to strike the best balance between powerful automation and transparent, loggable operations?

Logs don't lie.

For audit logging, look at platforms built on modern event-sourcing architectures. They tend to have cleaner, immutable logs.

Check out Customer.io. Their API exports granular event streams (message dispatched, profile updated) with a consistent JSON schema. You can pipe them directly to a Kinesis stream or S3 bucket for Splunk ingestion.

Also, their deliverability data is exposed as raw webhook events. More work to parse than a pre-baked report, but you own the raw data.

Trust but verify, then don't trust.
