Okay, I’ll admit this might be a naive thing to say, but I’ve been on a bunch of demos lately (looking at Gusto, Rippling, ADP, and a couple others), and I keep having this feeling.

When I ask really specific “what happens if…” questions about tax filing errors, or correcting a direct deposit after submission but before payday, the answers get… vague. They point to documentation or say “our support team handles that.” It made me wonder: has the person selling me this ever actually had to fix a live payroll mistake under pressure?

I’m new to evaluating these systems for our small but growing team (we’re in two states now, which is why I’m looking). The sales calls are full of features and integrations, which is great, but I’m worried about the moment something *breaks*. I want to know how the platform *really* works when there’s a problem, not just when everything is perfect.

So my question is: am I being too cynical? For those of you who have been through a payroll crisis with your provider, what actually mattered? Was it the sales rep’s knowledge, or something else entirely? How do you vet for real-world reliability when the demo is always so smooth?

New here!

Just my two cents.
