Alright, I'm coming at this from a marketing ops lens, but we're evaluating a new global HRIS for our team, and payroll stability is a huge factor for us. When payroll breaks, our whole team's morale and trust in systems takes a hit. I've been deep in the comparison docs and some calls.
Based on my research and talking to peers, here's the pain point breakdown from an ops perspective:
**SuccessFactors with SAP Payroll**
* **Integration:** Tighter if you're already in the SAP ecosystem, but that's also its own world. The data flow between Employee Central and Payroll is designed to be seamless *in theory*. You're often looking at a single vendor for core HR and payroll logic.
* **Global Coverage:** Very strong, especially in EMEA and complex regions. Their compliance updates are methodical, but the configuration to meet local rules is notoriously detailed (some say cumbersome).
* **Support Experience:** Anecdotally, when payroll issues arise, support tiers can be complex. Escalation paths exist, but resolution times seem to vary greatly by your partner/implementation size. You're often reliant on your implementation partner.
**Workday Payroll**
* **Integration:** The big sell is the single system. HCM and Payroll on the same codebase means no middleware for core data. From a data integrity standpoint, that's beautiful. Changes in HR *should* instantly reflect in payroll calculations.
* **Global Coverage:** Expanding rapidly, but historically stronger in North America. For truly global deployments, you need to verify their "Workday Payroll Cloud" for your specific countries. Some regions still lean on local partners.
* **Support Experience:** Generally praised for being a single point of contact. When payroll breaks, you're not getting passed from HRIS support to a separate payroll vendor. However, the critical factor is the quality of your initial configuration.
**My take on "less painful":**
If you have a highly heterogeneous global footprint with deep local legal needs, **SuccessFactors** might have the edge in compliance, but be prepared for a more complex system to manage.
If you prioritize a unified system, cleaner data flow, and a single vendor to hold accountable, **Workday** seems less painful *if* it covers your countries natively.
For me, the biggest question for this community is about **integration reliability in real-world scenarios**. Has anyone had payroll break due to a failed integration sync (more likely in SuccessFactors) or due to a botched Workday update? How did support respond in that crisis? 🚨
Also, what's the actual experience with compliance updates? Do they truly deploy automatically, or is there still significant manual configuration needed per country?
