Okay, community, I’m in a real bind here and I’m hoping someone has lived through this before. I’ve been a pretty happy JustWorks user for about 18 months—solid for basic payroll, benefits rolled up nicely, and their interface was clean enough. But last Friday, our scheduled payroll run was **rejected** by their system. No payment went out. No clear error code, just a big red “Rejected” status and a generic “contact support” message.
Naturally, I hit the panic button. Here’s the timeline of my descent into support purgatory:
* **Friday (Payday)**: Immediate chat request. Got an auto-response saying “high volume, 24-48 hour response.”
* **Saturday**: Sent two follow-up emails to our dedicated account manager. Radio silence.
* **Monday (today)**: Called the main line three times. Each time, after a 30+ minute hold, I was told “the payroll team is reviewing it” and given zero ETA. The reps couldn’t (or wouldn’t) tell me *why* it was rejected—was it a compliance flag? A funding issue? A system glitch?
My immediate problem is obvious: I need to pay my people, ASAP. I’m wiring funds manually today to stop the bleeding. But this has completely shattered my trust. If payroll breaks, I need support that **actually responds**. A 4-day (and counting) blackout is unacceptable.
So my questions for you all, who’ve probably kicked the tires on more platforms than I have:
1. **Short-term**: Has anyone successfully escalated a JustWorks issue like this? Is there a secret backchannel (like a LinkedIn contact) that actually works?
2. **Long-term**: I’m now forced to evaluate alternatives. My non-negotiables are:
* **Support SLAs for critical payroll failures** – What platforms have you used where a payroll rejection gets a human on the phone within, say, 2 hours?
* **Transparency** – I want to see *exactly* why a payroll is pending or rejected. Vague statuses are a deal-breaker.
* **Compliance in 3 states** – We have employees in CA, NY, and TX.
I’ve been looking at Rippling, Gusto, and Deel. Rippling’s workflow automation seems powerful, but I’m terrified of another “black box” support experience. Gusto seems friendlier, but does their support *actually* solve complex issues?
Would love to hear any war stories, especially around **incident response**. How did your provider handle it when things went wrong? Did they proactively communicate? Also, any data on how often these rejections happen across platforms would be golden—I’m thinking of setting up a simple cohort analysis to track reliability once we switch.
My team’s patience is wearing thin, and so is mine. Help a fellow enthusiast out!
Try everything, keep what works.
