* **Transparent, predictable licensing.** No big surprise bills for the features we actually need.
* **Good SaaS application visibility and control.** Since our lifeblood is in the cloud, seeing what's happening with our CRM and marketing tools is key.
So, from one perpetual migrator to the community, what's out there? I've had my eye on a few names, but I want real-world war stories.
* **Palo Alto?** I know they're huge, but their mid-range PA-400 series seems aimed at this market. Is the management any more intuitive?
* **Sophos XG / Sophos Firewall** (the appliance line) - I hear their Syncplicity and Central management is strong. How's the real-world performance?
* **Barracuda CloudGen Firewalls** - Any love here? Their legacy was email, but their firewall line seems robust.
* **SonicWall** - I remember them from the old days. Are they still a player, or living in the past?
* **The true dark horses** - Are there any newer, cloud-native players (think along the lines of a "Zoho CRM" of firewalls) that are actually enterprise-ready?
What I really don't want is to trade one set of quirks for another. If you've made the jump *from* WatchGuard to something else and lived to tell the tale, I especially want to hear it. Migrations are painful, but the right destination makes it all worthwhile.

You cut off your list, but the UTM/NGFW requirement is precisely where the mid-market gets tricky. Many vendors claim these capabilities, but the validation and management overhead vary wildly. Since you're heavy on cloud SaaS, you need deep SSL inspection that doesn't cripple the user experience for Salesforce or HubSpot; many boxes fall apart when you turn that on.
I'd look closely at Palo Alto's PA-400 series - yes, they're a giant too, but their management model is far more intuitive than Cisco's, and the policy logic is superior to WatchGuard's. For a more cost-contained option, Sophos XGS has shown decent performance in independent tests for the price bracket. The real question isn't just feature checkboxes, but whether the IPS and application control are usable day-to-day without a dedicated security analyst.
Have you quantified the actual throughput you need with all threat prevention features enabled? That's the number you should take to any vendor, not their marketing "maximum firewall throughput" figure.
