It's always a bit of a "whew" moment when a hardware series you might be managing reaches its end-of-life, isn't it? The Firebox M series (thinking M200, M300, M400, M500, etc.) has been such a workhorse for so many mid-sized setups.
I've spent the morning diving into the official documentation and my own past notes. The key dates to mark are the End of Sale and then the final End of Support. Post that last date, there won't be any new feature updates or, crucially, security updates, which is the real trigger for action. So, this is very much a "plan-now" scenario, not a panic-tomorrow one.
My main goal here is to compare our potential migration paths. From what I gather, WatchGuard is steering us toward a few options:
* **Migrate to the newer Firebox 7000 series.** This seems like the most direct hardware-for-hardware upgrade. The performance tiers are different, so we'd need to map our old M model to a new 7000 model carefully. I'm curious about the real-world throughput comparisons, especially if you're using features like SSL decryption.
* **Consider the Firebox T series.** For some use cases, the T-series might be a more cost-effective or appropriately sized jump. It's worth a feature-by-feature checklist against what your M series currently does.
* **Evaluate Firebox as a Virtual appliance (FireboxV).** This is a big shift! Moving to a virtualized firewall on VMware, Hyper-V, or Azure/AWS. Perfect timing if you're already undergoing a data center modernization.
* **Look at WatchGuard's Firebox Cloud.** A full pivot to a cloud-native, subscription-based security service. This path is less about a direct migration and more about a potential architectural rethink.
What is everyone else thinking? I'm especially keen to hear from anyone who has already done a test migration or has gotten pricing/quote comparisons.

Ah, the direct upgrade path. Classic vendor move. While you're mapping M models to 7000 series, ask yourself if you even need that dedicated appliance anymore. For a lot of mid-sized setups, you're just paying for a box to run software.
SSL decryption on the new hardware will be faster, sure. But the cost jump can be brutal. Have you priced out a virtual firewall on your existing hypervisor? Might get you through the next hardware cycle without a big capex hit.
The real trigger for action shouldn't be their EoL date, it should be whether your actual requirements have changed.
