Hey everyone! 👋 I've been a SonicWall user for years at my non-profit (around 50 users, hybrid office), but the renewal costs and some feature limitations finally pushed me to try pfSense. Just passed the 3-month mark, so I wanted to share my real-world experience with the switch.
The migration itself was a weekend project. The learning curve for pfSense is definitely steeper than SonicWall's GUI, but the community forums and documentation are incredible. For our needs, the biggest wins have been:
* **Cost:** We went from a hefty annual subscription to a one-time hardware cost (repurposed an old server). The savings are massive for a non-profit budget.
* **Flexibility:** The package system is a game-changer. We added a proper ad-blocker at the firewall level and set up more granular VLANs for our guest network and IoT devices.
* **Performance:** Our site-to-site VPN (to Azure) feels snappier, and I have much deeper insight into traffic with the built-in reporting tools.
That said, it's not all sunshine. I miss the "set it and forget it" simplicity of SonicWall for basic firewall rules. Troubleshooting in pfSense sometimes feels like you need to be a network engineer, and there's no vendor to call for immediate support. We also had to find separate solutions for content filtering, which was built into our SonicWall subscription.
Overall, for a tech-inclined team willing to learn, the move to pfSense has been hugely positive for us. The control and cost savings outweigh the added complexity. Would love to hear if anyone else has made a similar jump or has questions about our setup!
