I’m helping a friend's small retail shop (5 employees total) upgrade from a basic consumer-grade router, and I’ve narrowed it down to SonicWall and Sophos as the main contenders. I have some experience migrating email and CRM systems, but networking hardware is a bit newer for me.
From what I’ve gathered, both offer unified threat management (UTM) or next-gen firewall features suitable for a small business. The shop needs:
* Secure and reliable internet for their point-of-sale system.
* A separate guest Wi-Fi for customers.
* Basic content filtering to limit non-work browsing during business hours.
* Something manageable for me to set up and then hand over with minimal ongoing maintenance.
Budget is a factor, but not the only one. I’m leaning towards a subscription model for the security services.
For those of you with hands-on experience, especially in a very small business setting:
* Which platform did you find more intuitive for initial setup and occasional policy changes?
* How is the ongoing management overhead for a simple setup like this?
* Any gotchas with licensing or features that seem essential but aren’t included in the base packages?
I’ve seen a lot of comparisons for larger enterprises, but less for tiny teams. Any insights would be really appreciated.
