Hey everyone! Just wrapped up a massive Perimeter 81 rollout across 500+ store associates and corporate staff for a retail client. It was a journey, to say the least. We were replacing a clunky legacy VPN that the store teams hated using (which meant they often didn't, creating security gaps).
The main goal was zero-trust access to their inventory and reporting systems, with different permission sets for corporate vs. in-store users. The big lesson learned was that the technical setup was the easy part. The real challenge was the human and procedural side.
First, we massively underestimated the onboarding communication needed. Just sending an email with setup instructions led to a flood of support tickets. For the second wave, we created short, store-specific Loom videos (under 90 seconds) showing exactly how to install the app and connect. Ticket volume dropped by about 70%. The mobile app is great, but people need to see it in action.
Also, pay close attention to your group structures in the Perimeter 81 dashboard *before* you go live. We initially grouped users by department (Finance, Marketing, etc.), but access needs were actually location-based (Region 1 Stores, Region 2 Stores). We had to rework the groups post-launch, which was messy. Start with your access policies and build user groups backwards from that.
On the plus side, the integration with our existing IdP (Azure AD) was smooth for provisioning, and the team loves the simplicity of the connection toggle. The real win is seeing granular access logs now—it's a game changer for compliance audits.
