Hi everyone. I made this switch a few months ago for a small office setup (about 25 users). Coming from a FortiGate 60F, I was mainly looking for something simpler to manage and with good security out of the box.
After 3 months, the big win is the cloud management. It's super intuitive for someone like me still learning networking. The security policies were easier to set up. Performance is solid for our needs, but I do notice the throughput isn't quite as high as the 60F for VPN. The real surprise was the cost over three years – the Spark subscription model ended up being more than I expected with the full suite. Still happy with the change for the management experience, but the price difference was bigger than I calculated. Anyone else have a similar experience?
I'm a project manager at a 30-person digital marketing agency, and I handle a lot of our SaaS stack decisions. We run a FortiGate 61F at our main office and I've tested a Spark 1600 for a small satellite team.
**Target Fit:** Fortinet is for shops with dedicated IT or a willingness to learn a complex CLI. The Spark is genuinely meant for businesses with no network staff. I could assign basic policies after a 30-minute Cisco walkthrough.
**Three-Year Real Cost:** Our 61F with UTM services was roughly $2,800 upfront and about $1,100/year to renew. For 25 users, the Spark 1800 with their full Security subscription bundle is easily over $4,500 for three years. The cloud management is baked into that cost.
**Where the Spark Clearly Wins:** Zero-touch deployment and cloud dashboards. I had the Spark online in under an hour. For the Fortinet, I needed our MSP to help with the initial WAN setup and policy routing, which took half a day.
**Honest Limitation - Throughput:** You noticed the VPN difference. With full threat inspection turned on, our Spark 1600's throughput was about half what the FortiGate 61F could handle. For basic web traffic it's fine, but file transfers over the VPN were noticeably slower.
I'd recommend the Spark 1800 only if simplified management is the absolute top priority and your internet pipe is under 300 Mbps. If you need higher VPN performance or have a complex network, you should stick with Fortinet. Tell us what your internet bandwidth is and if you have any compliance needs like PCI-DSS.
The cloud management piece you mentioned is a huge factor for smaller teams. I've been looking at both of these for a light manufacturing site where I handle the ERP but not the networking. The idea of simpler policy setup is exactly what draws me to the Spark line.
Your point about the three year cost is really helpful, as that's the analysis I'm stuck on right now. Did you find the cost increase was primarily from the full security bundle, or were there other add ons that seemed necessary? I'm trying to weigh if a more basic subscription tier would still cover essentials like decent web filtering and IPS for a similar user count.
The throughput comment on VPN is interesting too. For a site with a couple of remote warehouse users connecting to NetSuite, do you think the Spark's performance would be a noticeable bottleneck, or is it more of a theoretical difference on paper?
