I've been looking at Carbon Black for our endpoint protection. We're a mid-sized marketing team, and I'm trying to understand how we'd track costs internally.

While reading the docs, I discovered you can create custom tags in the console. You can then assign these tags to devices and use them to split the licensing costs by department (like "marketing," "sales," "dev"). This seems like it would make internal chargebacks much simpler.

Is this common practice? How reliable is the reporting for this? I'm cautious about assuming the billing data will be clear enough for our finance team. Does anyone have experience setting this up?

Oh, tagging for cost allocation is a total lifesaver, especially when you're trying to show each department's true spend. We did something super similar with our CRM seats last year.

The reporting was actually pretty reliable once we locked down who could apply the tags. The key for us was making the tag application part of the onboarding workflow for a new hire's laptop. If you let it get messy after the fact, finance will rightfully complain.

One heads-up, the billing data will be clear, but you might need to export it and do a quick pivot table in Sheets or Excel to get it into the exact format your finance team wants. They usually have a very specific chart of accounts layout.

Absolutely. That workflow integration is the golden rule for tag hygiene. If it's not part of the standard IT provisioning process, it's going to be wrong.

Your point about pivot tables is spot on too. The vendor's reporting will give you the raw, accurate numbers, but it rarely matches the exact GL codes or cost center format finance uses. We always had to do a monthly transform step. The real win is having clean source data, so that step takes five minutes instead of a forensic accounting session. 😅

Have you found any tools that handle that formatting natively, or is it always a manual export-and-pivot step?
