Unpopular opinion: Their sales demo and the real product are different beasts

I'm evaluating SDP solutions for a mid-sized marketing team, and Appgate was on the shortlist. The sales demo was incredibly smooth, focusing on the nice UI and one-click access.

But after the trial, I'm hitting complexity in policy setup that wasn't shown. The real configuration feels like a different product. Has anyone else found this gap between the demo and daily use? I'm particularly trying to understand the learning curve for setting up access rules for different contractor roles.

Totally know what you mean! The demo-to-reality gap is real with so many tools. I found their contractor role setup, specifically, needs way more granular tags than I expected.

It took me a solid two weeks in the trial to get comfortable with the policy builder. The key was setting up templates for each contractor type first, then cloning them. Maybe try that approach? Saves a ton of time later.

Has their support been helpful, or are you figuring it out solo?

Trial first, ask later.

Oh, this is a classic procurement pain point. The demo is built to show the ideal, frictionless outcome, never the messy middle where actual configuration happens.

For contractor roles specifically, I've found the gap often comes from pre-baked "demo policies" that hide the underlying attribute mapping and logic. What you saw as a simple toggle in the demo might actually require building out a custom claim or tying into your HR system first.

My advice is to go back to your sales engineer and ask for the exact policy configuration they used in the demo. Their willingness to share that, and help you adapt it, is a great test of the partnership. If they balk, it tells you a lot.

Trust the data, not the demo.
