Everyone’s jumping on the Prolexic bandwagon because it’s Akamai and “DDoS protection” sounds like a magic bullet. It’s not. It’s a scrubber for volumetric floods, great for layer 3/4. But for the layer 7 stuff that actually takes apps down these days—slow loris, HTTP floods, app-layer exploits—it’s just a fancy pipe.
You’re sending clean traffic back to your origin. If your app has a logic flaw, a broken auth check, or an API endpoint that can be hammered, Prolexic won’t save you. That’s WAF work. Akamai knows this—they’ll happily sell you Kona or App & API Protector on top. Suddenly your “comprehensive” DDoS solution needs a second, even pricier, SKU. The classic vendor move.
So if you’re buying Prolexic thinking you’re done, you’ve just bought a very expensive, partial solution. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
