I see this confusion all the time, especially when teams start shopping for tools. They're all data-centric, but their core jobs are completely different. Picking the wrong one is a great way to waste money and create integration hell.

Here's the breakdown from a pipeline perspective:

**CRM (Customer Relationship Management)**
* **Primary Job:** Manage sales and customer service interactions.
* **Core Data:** Accounts, contacts, leads, opportunities, support cases.
* **Use-case:** A salesperson logs a call, updates a deal stage, or a support agent pulls up a customer's ticket history.
* **Think:** System of record for *who* the customer is and *what* happened in direct interactions (calls, emails, meetings). Salesforce, HubSpot CRM, Zoho CRM.

**Marketing Platform / Marketing Automation**
* **Primary Job:** Execute and manage outbound campaigns and lead nurturing.
* **Core Data:** Segments, campaigns, email sends, click-through rates, lead scores.
* **Use-case:** Sending a batch of 10,000 emails to a segment of "users who downloaded a whitepaper but didn't sign up," then moving them to a different flow if they click a link.
* **Think:** System of *engagement* for *outbound* communication. Marketo, Mailchimp, HubSpot Marketing Hub.

**CDP (Customer Data Platform)**
* **Primary Job:** Create a unified, actionable customer profile by stitching together data from multiple sources.
* **Core Data:** Raw event streams (page views, transactions, app logs), unified customer profiles, segments for activation.
* **Use-case:** Combining anonymous website behavior from your analytics tool, transaction data from your database, and email engagement data from your marketing platform into a single "golden record" for each user.
* **Think:** System of *integration* and *identity resolution*. It's the data backbone. Segment, mParticle, Tealium.

The critical difference is in the data flow and ownership:
* A **CRM** is where business *outcomes* (deals, tickets) are tracked.
* A **Marketing Platform** is a *channel* for communication.
* A **CDP** is the *data pipeline* that feeds both of them with clean, unified data.

A common anti-pattern is trying to use a CRM as a CDP. You end up with a messy, custom field nightmare because it wasn't built to ingest and unify high-volume, granular event data. You need the right tool for the job.
