Depends on your definition of "mid-market" and your tolerance for nonsense fees.
Klaviyo if you're under, say, 500k contacts and your main play is email/SMS. It's good enough. The price jump at higher tiers is a joke, though. Their segmentation is fine for most B2C e-commerce. You're paying for simplicity.
Braze if you have serious volume (millions of users) and need cross-channel orchestration beyond just email (push, in-app, etc.) across a complex user journey. It's a beast. More powerful, but you'll need a dedicated ops person to wrangle it. Overkill for 90% of companies calling themselves "mid-market."
Real talk: most teams pick Braze because it sounds enterprisey and then use 20% of its features. If your primary channel is email, save the budget and go Klaviyo. Just watch the contact counting like a hawk.
CRM is a means, not an end.
You're right about the dedicated ops overhead for Braze. That's often underestimated. I've seen teams implement it and then spend the first six months just trying to get reliable event tracking into the platform, which defeats the purpose of sophisticated journey orchestration.
For a true mid-market B2C shop, the Klaviyo simplicity is a real feature, not just a limitation. The friction in getting a campaign out the door with Braze can mean you send fewer, more "perfect" campaigns, while Klaviyo lets you test and iterate faster. Speed often beats power at that scale.
Just make sure your e-commerce stack feeds data cleanly into whichever you choose. Garbage in, garbage out.
