You're comparing a luxury cruise ship to a DIY raft. One's expensive but has lifeboats. The other is cheap until you hit an iceberg.

Marketo's TCO isn't just the license. It's the hours your team *doesn't* spend:
- Building and maintaining email render logic for 37 different clients.
- Scaling your own database for lead scoring and attribution.
- Writing yet another script to sync contacts to Salesforce because the API changed.

Homegrown makes sense if your "growth stack" is a CSV and `cron` job. For 50k contacts and a simple flow? Bash it. For 500k and complex multi-touch attribution? You'll spend more on devops than a Marketo license. The business model decides it: are you a SaaS with a dedicated engineering team, or a content site where marketing owns the tools?
