PostHog vs Matomo for self-hosted analytics on a 5-eng team

We're a small team of five engineers setting up self-hosted analytics for our web app. We've narrowed it down to PostHog and Matomo but I'm a bit stuck on the pricing and licensing side for self-hosting.

I know both have open-source versions, but I'm trying to understand the real costs and limitations. For a team our size, what would you recommend? I'm especially curious about things like user or event limits, feature restrictions in the free tier, and any hidden costs for scaling (like needing plugins or enterprise features later).

Our main needs are basic event tracking, dashboards, and maybe session recording down the line.
