Complete newbie question: What's a realistic monthly cost for a small project?

Hi everyone! I'm super excited to be here and finally diving into the world of observability and LLM tracing. I've been reading about Traceloop and it sounds perfect for a small side project I'm planning.

I want to build a simple RAG application with maybe 2-3 data sources and a single LLM provider (like OpenAI). I'd probably have under 1,000 traces per day while I'm experimenting and building.

Looking at the pricing page, I see the **Team** plan starts at $249/month. But as a complete newbie, I'm trying to understand what a "realistic" cost would be for a genuinely small, personal project.

Could anyone who's run a small project share what your actual monthly bill looks like? I have a few specific questions:

* Does the $249 plan include a reasonable amount of credits for a low-volume project, or do you typically go over and incur overages?
* Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of, like data retention or specific features locked behind higher tiers?
* For a beginner just starting out, is there a recommended path? Should I just use the free tier until I hit limits?

I'm coming from a BI/analytics background (Tableau, dbt), so I'm used to pricing based on data volume or seats, and this credit system is new to me. A detailed walkthrough of a sample monthly cost for a tiny project would be incredibly helpful! 😊

Great question! I'm also starting a small project and the jump from free to $249 felt steep.

From my digging, it looks like the free tier gives you 1,000 traces per month. For "under 1,000 traces per day," you'd blow through that in a single day. So the free tier sadly isn't a path forward unless you trace almost nothing.

I'm curious if anyone has tried using the free credits from the major clouds for this? Like, does Traceloop have a free allowance on AWS Marketplace or GCP maybe? That's how I've kept other tool costs near zero for learning.

That's a really good point about the free tier. 1,000 traces per month goes by in a flash when you're actively developing and testing, doesn't it? I get why they have to limit it, but it makes the jump to $249 feel huge for a personal project.

I'm in the same boat, coming from a dbt/analytics world where you often pay for compute hours. I haven't found any cloud marketplace credits for Traceloop yet, but I'm also wondering if maybe there's an open-source alternative you could run yourself for a while? Something like LangSmith's self-hosted option, but for tracing. It'd be more setup work, but the cost would just be your own compute. Has anyone gone that route?
