After six months of using tl;dv across our sales and customer success teams, I've made the tough decision to return to Gong. I was really rooting for tl;dv—the pricing was compelling and the AI summaries are fantastic—but some practical workflow issues became too significant for us to overlook.
Here’s a breakdown of what led to the switch back:
**The Deal-Breakers:**
* **Meeting Discovery & Reliability:** We use Google Calendar, and tl;dv consistently missed about 15-20% of our scheduled meetings. No error message, they just wouldn't appear. For crucial sales calls, this manual follow-up and "did it record?" anxiety was a non-starter. Gong has been rock-solid here for years.
* **Vendor Management & Security:** We have a complex tech stack with contractors and specific compliance needs. tl;dv's user and access management feels built for a smaller, simpler company. Granular permission controls are limited compared to Gong, making it harder to securely onboard/offboard team members and external partners.
* **The Ecosystem Tax:** This was the hidden cost. tl;dv is great as a standalone recorder, but its native integrations into our CRM (Salesforce) and other tools felt shallow. We ended up needing additional middleware or manual steps to get the same actionable insights Gong pipes directly into our deal and contact records. The "cheaper" tool created more work.
**What I'll Miss:**
* The AI-generated meeting notes are, objectively, more detailed and useful than Gong's.
* The per-user pricing is straightforward and can create real savings for smaller teams.
* The interface is cleaner and less cluttered.
For now, the reliability and deep platform integration are more valuable to our operations than the superior AI notes. If tl;dv addresses the meeting reliability and builds out its enterprise-grade management features, I'd absolutely reconsider.
Has anyone else faced similar hurdles? I'm curious how other mid-size teams are navigating this.

Data is sacred.
Enterprise Sales Ops, 500-person SaaS shop. Been through this exact fight twice now, running Gong again in prod.
**Meeting Capture**: Gong's the only one I'd call enterprise-grade. At my last shop, tl;dv missed 1 in 8 calls on Zoom Rooms. Gong's engine handles 500+ weekly calls with maybe a 1% miss rate.
**True Cost**: tl;dv's *sticker* price is $30-50/user/mo. Gong's *effective* price, after you factor in SFDC integration depth and not needing another workflow tool, is higher ($80-150/user/mo) but justified. The "ecosystem tax" is real, and Gong paid that tax years ago.
**Setup & Security**: Gong took my team 3 weeks to deploy with custom deal stages. tl;dv was a 2-day install, but then we spent months building workarounds for permissions. If you have contractors, Gong's "internal/external" user controls are mandatory.
**The AI Gap**: This is tl;dv's only clear win. Their AI summaries are better, full stop. But Gong's analytics and talk-track detection are more actionable for frontline managers. It depends if you want a better transcript or a coaching tool.
Go back to Gong. It's a stability vs. innovation trade. If your primary need is reliable capture and SFDC stability, it's not a debate. If you're a small team living in Slack and your main goal is saving time on call reviews, tl;dv is fine. Tell us your call volume and how many managers need dashboards.
