Has anyone tried feeding Suno a famous melody snippet? IP questions.

Hey folks, just ran a curious little experiment last night and wanted to see if anyone else has poked at this.

I took the iconic opening four-note motif from Beethoven's 5th (you know, da-da-da-dummm) and fed it to Suno in a custom mode prompt as a simple melody description. The goal wasn't to copy it, but to see if it would use it as a jumping-off point for a new track. The result was... interesting. It generated a synth-rock track that had a *rhythmic feel* eerily close to the original, though the actual notes were different. It got me thinking about the fuzzy line between inspiration and infringement in the AI music space.

Has anyone else tried feeding Suno a famous, short melody snippet? I'm wondering:
* What was your experience? Did it seem to "recognize" and transform it, or just ignore it?
* Are there any best practices or prompt phrasing tricks to steer this kind of "melodic inspiration"?
* Most importantly, what are the IP implications here? If the output *feels* derivative but uses different notes, who owns what? The original composer? Suno? The prompter?

I'm less concerned about my Beethoven test (public domain) and more about modern, copyrighted riffs. Could this be a potential pitfall for users wanting to generate original content?

Your experiment with the rhythmic feel is the key observation. I've run similar tests with short, copyrighted basslines from 80s pop tracks. Suno's transformer layers appear to map to latent rhythmic and contour patterns, not discrete note sequences. The output rarely replicates the exact intervals, but it captures the *topology* of the phrase, the rise and fall.

On IP, you're right to be concerned about modern riffs. The legal gray area isn't in the note-for-note copy, it's in the substantial similarity of the "feel," which is exactly what these models excel at extracting. Current copyright law isn't equipped for this. The prompter likely owns the output under Suno's ToS, but that ownership could be contested if the derived feel is deemed a protected expression.

For prompting, I've found that describing the melodic motion in abstract terms ("a descending three-note motif followed by a leap") yields more transformative results than referencing a specific song. It forces the model to work from a structural concept rather than its training data's association with that audio fingerprint.

That point about modern, copyrighted riffs is where it gets really sticky. I've experimented with a few famous pop hooks, described by their contour rather than note names. Like you found, the notes are never identical, but the emotional signature is often there.

It feels like we're prompting in a legal blind spot. The output might be technically "new," but if the recognizable soul of a copyrighted melody is embedded in it, does that constitute a derivative work? Suno's ToS says we own it, but that ownership feels precarious if a rights holder disagrees.

I'm curious if anyone has read how platforms are handling takedowns for this yet. The rhythmic feel seems to be the core IP risk.
