As the IT architect responsible for our university's research infrastructure, I was tasked with evaluating a reference management and academic discovery platform for a consortium of approximately 200 researchers across various disciplines. The primary contenders were **ResearchRabbit**, a relatively new, AI-driven discovery tool, and **Citavi**, a well-established reference management and knowledge organization software. Our requirements extended beyond simple citation management to include collaborative workflows, discovery capabilities, and long-term preservation of knowledge structures.

The core distinction lies in their fundamental design paradigms. Citavi operates as a powerful, desktop-centric knowledge organization system with optional team collaboration. ResearchRabbit is a cloud-native, network-based discovery platform that uses collaborative filtering and AI to surface relevant literature.

Our recommended path is to **license Citavi Team for its core reference management and writing workflow**, while **promoting ResearchRabbit as an institution-wide discovery tool** for all researchers. This creates a complementary stack: use ResearchRabbit to find and triage literature, then export relevant citations into Citavi for deep management, annotation, and final manuscript production.
