Hey everyone! I’ve been living in the marketing automation and analytics world for a while now, and like many of you, I was super excited when Relevance AI launched. I used it solidly for about a year, but six months ago, I made the switch to Pinecone for our core vector database needs. I figured a real-world comparison might help others weighing their options.

For context, our main use case is powering semantic search and recommendations within our customer email workflows. We’re ingesting help docs, blog content, and product data to serve up relevant content triggers. With Relevance, setup was incredibly fast – I loved the low-code feel and the built-in chains for common tasks. It felt like a full-stack solution. However, as our dataset grew and our need for low-latency, high-volume queries increased, we started hitting some bottlenecks. The performance was fine for prototypes, but in production, we needed more control and raw speed.

The switch to Pinecone required more engineering effort upfront, no question. We had to build out our own embedding and indexing pipelines. But the payoff in query performance and stability has been massive. Our average search latency dropped by about 70%, and we’ve had zero downtime related to the vector DB in six months. The cost structure also became more predictable for our scale. What I miss from Relevance is the all-in-one dashboard and the quick workflow builders – it’s a fantastic tool for getting started fast or for teams without deep engineering resources.

So, here’s my take: If you’re in the prototyping stage, focused on content marketing projects, or don’t have a dedicated data engineering team, Relevance AI is a brilliant choice. It gets you from idea to insight so quickly. But if you’re running at scale, where millisecond latency and high throughput for A/B testing different recommendation models are critical (like in our automated email flows), then investing in a more specialized solution like Pinecone is worth the lift. For us, it was the right move as we grew.

Happy building
