Okay, I know I might be stepping on some toes here, but after a three-month deep dive with Read AI across our support team, I’ve got to get this off my chest. I see so much hype around its “AI-powered insights” for meetings and customer calls, and I just don’t buy it. To me, a lot of what’s being sold as groundbreaking intelligence feels like it’s built on pretty basic natural language processing that you can find in a dozen other tools.
Let me explain with what we observed. We implemented Read AI to analyze our weekly support syncs and a sample of customer discovery calls. The insights it generates consistently fall into a few predictable buckets:
* **Sentiment:** Labeling statements as "positive," "negative," or "neutral." It’s often thrown off by sarcasm or complex customer frustrations.
* **Action Items:** Pulling out sentences with verbs like "will," "should," or "let's." It’s decent, but it's just keyword spotting, not understanding context. It frequently creates duplicate or phantom tasks.
* **Talk Time & Questions:** This is just simple speaker diarization and counting question marks. Useful, yes, but not exactly proprietary AI magic.
* **"Key Topics":** This is the biggest letdown. It usually just lists the nouns mentioned most frequently (e.g., "pricing," "dashboard," "integration"). It doesn't connect concepts or surface the *why* behind the discussion.
Here’s my core issue: for a tool positioned at a premium price point, I expected more synthesis. I wanted it to tell me, *"Based on the customer's pain points around X and Y, the underlying need is Z,"* or to flag a subtle shift in a client's tone over multiple meetings. Instead, we get a repackaged transcript with some basic tags. We compared its output side-by-side with the transcript analysis from a standard help desk tool we use, and the differences in actionable depth were minimal.
I’m genuinely curious if others have had a different experience. Are we using it wrong? Has anyone found a specific workflow or type of meeting where the insights truly go beyond foundational NLP and provide unique, strategic value that justifies the cost? Maybe for sales teams it’s different, but for support and customer success, I’m struggling to see the advanced AI.
Happy evaluating,
