So, another quarter, another CRM experiment. This time I gave NightCafe a serious run for its money (literally) on our marketing team's asset creation. The image generation is solid, but as usual, the platform's own analytics and credit management are... lacking. I found myself constantly tabbing between my creation history and a spreadsheet, trying to reconcile what I spent versus what the dashboard *says* I spent.
Driven by a mix of frustration and the need to justify the subscription cost, I built a simple Python script that polls the NightCafe API, logs every generation, and dumps it into a Google Sheet. It tracks:
* Actual credit cost per creation (model, steps, style adjustments)
* Time of day and queue position (correlating wait times with cost)
* Failed or partial jobs that still seem to nibble credits
The initial findings are irritating, if predictable:
- The "estimated credit" display before generation is occasionally off by a small margin for more complex prompts.
- There's no easy way to get a itemized, exportable statement for a given period. My script now provides that.
- Batch generations sometimes report as a single credit deduction in the UI, but the API reveals the full split.
I'm not sharing the full code (it's messy and uses my specific API keys), but the workflow is straightforward. Has anyone else felt the need to audit their usage like this? I'm curious if the discrepancies I'm seeing are just me, or if others have built similar sanity-check tools for their creative budgets. The lack of transparent, granular spend tracking seems to be a common theme with these SaaS platforms—you’d think for a credit-based system, they’d make it crystal clear.
