What's the real turnaround time for a custom voice? Vendor says 2 weeks, but...

Having recently completed a procurement process for a synthetic voice solution, I was compelled to investigate the advertised timelines versus reality. My team required a custom, brand-aligned voice for a suite of instructional videos. Murf.ai, among others, listed a typical turnaround of "up to 2 weeks" for a custom voice. Our experience, and the anecdotal data I've aggregated from other technical teams, suggests this metric requires significant deconstruction.

The stated "2 weeks" is a best-case scenario, contingent on several variables that are often opaque during the sales cycle. The actual timeline is a function of multiple, often sequential, stages:

* **Cloning Source Material Quality & Length:** Vendors request 3+ hours of clean, studio-quality audio. Sourcing, recording, and cleaning this data internally took us 5 business days alone. This is *client-side time* not counted in the "2 weeks."
* **Initial Model Training & Iteration:** The first draft is rarely production-ready. Our initial output had noticeable artifacts in technical terminology. Each revision cycle added 2-3 business days.
* **Benchmark Metrics:** We measured each iteration using:
* **MOS (Mean Opinion Score):** Subjective human scoring (1-5) on naturalness.
* **WER (Word Error Rate):** Automated accuracy check on scripted vs. generated output.
* **Emotional Tone Consistency:** Measured via spectral analysis (comparing pitch and intensity variance to source).
The model only passed our internal gate (MOS > 4.0, WER < 2%) after three iterations.

**Our Actual Timeline Breakdown:**

| Phase | Vendor-Advertised Time | Actual Elapsed Time (Business Days) | Notes |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Source Audio Prep | (Not Specified) | 5 | Internal resource cost. |
| Queue & Initial Training | Part of "2 weeks" | 7 | Started after source approval. |
| Revision Cycle 1 | Part of "2 weeks" | 3 | Technical term mispronunciations. |
| Revision Cycle 2 | (Implied in timeline) | 3 | Intonation adjustments. |
| **Total Project Time** | **~10 business days** | **18 business days** | From project kickoff to final approval. |

The critical finding is that the "2 weeks" is a *vendor-active processing* estimate, not a *project completion* estimate. It typically excludes client-side preparation, review, and revision latency. For an enterprise-ready voice suitable for public-facing, branded content, you should plan for a **3-4 week project window**, accounting for at least two revision cycles.

I'm interested in data from other teams. Has anyone conducted similar benchmarking? Specifically:
* What were your objective pass/fail criteria for voice acceptance?
* Did you experience a "queue time" before training commenced?
* How did the cost tier (e.g., Enterprise vs. Pro) affect iteration speed and support responsiveness?
