Alright, let's cut through the marketing fluff. My team (pharma R&D, about 150 researchers) is being pushed to "optimize our literature review workflow." Translation: management wants us to find relevant papers faster without drowning in PubMed.

The shortlist from our IT department is Iris.ai and ResearchGate. On paper, they seem to serve different masters, but both are being pitched as "knowledge discovery platforms."

Here's my initial, deeply cynical take:
* **ResearchGate** feels like academic LinkedIn crossed with a preprint repository. The "recommendations" are often just what's popular or what your network is posting. I've found some gems via direct author queries, but it's noisy and the signal-to-noise ratio is terrible for systematic discovery.
* **Iris.ai** is being sold on its AI engine—contextual search, filtering by concepts, etc. Sounds great, but I've been burned by AI that's just fancy keyword matching (looking at you, some "AI" features in Salesforce). Their workspace feature for organizing projects *could* be useful if it actually works.

What I need to know from anyone who's been in the trenches:
* **Integration Hell:** How well do either of these actually play with existing reference managers (e.g., Zotero, EndNote) or internal knowledge bases? Or is it another silo?
* **The Duplication Problem:** Does Iris.ai genuinely help deduplicate findings from multiple search queries, or do you end up with the same paper tagged five different ways?
* **Real-world Gotchas:** With ResearchGate, we're already seeing "recommended" papers that are just paywalled and the full text isn't available on the platform. Is Iris.ai any better at actually getting you the PDF, or is it just a smarter search engine that still hits the publisher's paywall?

We're mid-market, so budget isn't unlimited, but the pain point is real. Is Iris.ai actually a step-change, or just a more expensive, prettier search interface? Is ResearchGate's social component actually valuable for R&D, or just a distraction?

been there, migrated that
