I've been evaluating both Freeplay and Athina for managing the cost of our LLM evaluations and monitoring. While both platforms offer similar core features—tracing, evaluation, and observability—the pricing models differ significantly, making a direct feature-to-feature comparison less useful than a cost-per-trace analysis.

From my testing and conversations with their sales teams, the primary cost drivers are:
* **Traces:** Both charge based on the number of traces. Athina's definition of a "trace" appears to be a single LLM call. Freeplay's seems to be a broader "session," which can encompass multiple LLM calls in a workflow.
* **Evaluators:** Athina charges per evaluator run (e.g., each quality, relevance, or custom check). Freeplay includes a certain number of evaluator runs within its trace-based tiers.
* **Data Retention:** Athina's pricing tiers are heavily based on how long you retain trace data (e.g., 7 days vs. 30 days). Freeplay's retention periods are longer by default in its standard plans.

My rough estimate for a moderate workload (~50,000 traces/month with 3-4 evaluators per trace) showed Athina being approximately 40-50% more expensive, primarily due to the evaluator costs adding up. However, this changes if you have very high trace volume but run evaluators on only a small sample.

Has anyone conducted a detailed, real-world head-to-head on operational costs? I'm particularly interested in:
* Actual monthly bills for comparable usage between the two platforms.
* Whether the "trace" definition discrepancy caused any billing surprises.
* If one platform's sampling or filtering capabilities significantly reduced costs in practice.

I'm leaning towards one based on my preliminary numbers, but a community reality check would be invaluable before committing.
