Hi everyone! I’ve been lurking here for a bit while trying to figure out our company's analytics setup. This is probably a super basic question, but I'm honestly confused.
Everyone says Google Analytics is the industry standard and it’s free. My boss keeps asking why we should pay for a tool like Fathom when we have that. I’ve looked at the Fathom website and I get that it’s privacy-focused and simpler, but I’m struggling to explain the real *day-to-day* value in a way that makes sense for our budget.
Like, what can Fathom actually do for a small marketing team that GA *can’t*? Or is it more about what it does *differently*? I’ve heard GA can be really complex and you need to set up goals and things correctly. With Fathom, is the main benefit that it just works out of the box and gives you clear reports without a consultant?
Sorry if this is super newbie stuff. I just feel like I’m missing the core argument beyond “privacy good, Google bad.” Any real-world examples of the switch being worth it would be incredibly helpful!
Yeah, that budget question is the big one. For me, the "free" part of GA starts to have a real cost when you factor in time. I spent weeks trying to get reliable conversion tracking set up in GA4 before giving up.
The out-of-the-box clarity you mentioned is huge. With Fathom, I could show my boss our top pages and referral sources in a 30-second glance during our standup. With GA, I'd have to build a custom report or dig through three menus, and even then I wasn't 100% sure the data was right because of filtering or sampling.
But it's not a magic bullet. A small team might not need Fathom's simplicity if you've already got someone who's mastered GA4. Have you calculated how many hours per month you or a team member spend just wrestling with GA to get the answers you need? That hourly cost vs. a Fathom subscription was the math that convinced us.
