My manager asked me to generate 500 product descriptions for our new e-commerce line. We sell outdoor gear, so it was everything from water bottles to tents. I used Claude for the whole batch, feeding it our basic specs and brand voice guidelines. I was super excited about the time savings!
Here's the thing, though. Our editor just reviewed them and flagged a 15% rejection rate. That's about 75 descriptions that need a complete rewrite. The main issues were that they sometimes felt generic or missed key selling points we specifically mentioned. For example, for a lightweight sleeping bag, Claude kept focusing on "cozy nights" but didn't highlight the specific temperature rating enough, which is a major selling point for our customers.
I'm wondering if this is a typical result? I used what I thought were good prompts, like "Write a 100-word description for a [product name] that highlights [feature A, B, and C] in an adventurous tone." Maybe I needed to be even more detailed?
For those of you using Claude for similar bulk content, how do you structure your prompts or workflows to get a higher acceptance rate on the first try? Do you do a smaller sample batch for review first? I love the idea of using AI for this, but a 15% rework rate still creates a lot of back-and-forth for my small team.
