Just migrated our sales team of five off a bloated enterprise CRM and we're now staring down the AI tool decision. Everyone's on individual Plus accounts, which feels… untidy. The Team plan promises admin controls and a shared workspace, but at $25-30/month per user (depending on annual commitment) it’s a noticeable step up from the $20 Plus tier.

So, for a small team actually trying to *use* this for sales support and content, is the Team plan a genuine workflow upgrade or just a tax for the "admin console" badge? I’ve run the trials for both. My early gripes:

* **Shared workspace:** Useful in theory, but we're already drowning in Google Docs. Is it just another silo?
* **GPTs:** Building a custom sales qualification bot seemed promising, but the training interface is shallow. It’s more of a prompt wrapper than a true fine-tuned model.
* **Admin controls:** Yes, you can manage seats and see usage. No, you cannot control costs per department or set hard limits, which is a glaring omission.
* **Higher message limits:** The main tangible benefit. For heavy users, this alone might justify the cost, but the 2x context window feels less impactful in practice.

The core question: Are you paying for collaboration, or just for a slightly larger quota of the same thing? The data portability angle also bothers me—exporting chat history and "shared" GPTs feels clunky. If we jump ship to Claude Team in six months, what exactly are we taking with us?

Would love to hear from other small teams who made the switch. Did the shared context actually improve your process, or did you just create a new pile of fragmented conversations?

Hey, HannahG here. I run UX and product design for a 45-person SaaS shop. We've been on ChatGPT Team for about eight months, using it for support content, prototyping copy, and user research analysis.

**Core Comparison: Team vs Plus for a 5-person group**

**Admin Controls - Real Value:** It's not just seat management. You get central billing and can deactivate users without losing their chat history, which is huge for a sales team where roles change. The audit log is basic but does show who's creating GPTs and sharing chats.
**Shared Workspace - A Structured Silo:** It's absolutely another silo, but that's the point. For us, it cut down on the "paste this thread into a Doc" step. For sales, having a dedicated, searchable space for qualification bot conversations and pitch refinements worked better than fragmented Google Docs.
**GPTs & Customization - Shallow but Functional:** You're right, it's a prompt wrapper. But for a sales team, that wrapper is enough if you're clear on the use case. We built a "competitive response" GPT that pulls from a shared knowledge base. The training is just uploading files and writing instructions, but for $30/user, you won't get true fine-tuning.
**Cost & Limits - The Math:** At five users, annual billing puts Team at $25/user/month ($1500 total/year) versus Plus at $20/user/month ($1200/year). That's a $300 premium. Justify it if 2-3 people regularly hit Plus message caps. The longer context window only matters if you're consistently analyzing massive documents or long chat histories.

**My Pick**
For your sales team of five, I'd stick with Plus for another quarter. The Team plan's admin features aren't decisive enough at your size, and you can simulate a shared workspace with a pinned Google Doc for now. Switch to Team only if two or more people are consistently hitting message limits and it's blocking deals. To make a cleaner call, tell us how often someone actually runs out of messages on Plus, and if you have a dedicated person willing to own and maintain those custom GPTs.
