Used Braintrust for six months. It's not a tool, it's a platform. You're paying for the network and the vetting. That's the core value proposition.
If you're expecting a SaaS dashboard, it's not that. The fee gets you into the talent pool and the job feed. The contract terms are standardized and heavily freelancer-favorable, which is significant. You're paying them to handle the client side negotiation.
From an SRE perspective: found two long-term contracts through it. Both were actual production engineering roles, not "devops" ticket jockeys. The screening on both sides is real. Wasted less time on calls with recruiters who don't know what an SLI is.
Worth the fee? Only if you are actively freelancing and want high-quality, direct client leads. Not worth it for occasional work. It filters out a lot of noise.
Example of a typical project spec from the platform, anonymized:
```
Role: Contract SRE
Scope: Define and implement SLIs/SLOs for core payment services. Build runbook framework. 20-hour weekly commitment.
Duration: 6 months
Budget: $145-$165/hr
Client: Series C fintech
Requirements: 5+ years SRE, direct experience with GCP, incident command, writing production runbooks.
```
That clarity upfront saves hours.
