Our team switched from Jira Cloud to Linear six months ago. We're a 12-person team, mostly backend Python devs with some infra (IaC, AWS). We were drowning in Jira process. The pitch was: less friction, more focus.
Here's the raw take after half a year:
**What Linear got right:**
* Speed is unreal. Creating, updating, searching issues is near instant.
* The CLI tool is a game-changer for devs. Quick logs from terminal, no context switch.
* Clean GitHub integration. PRs → Issues auto-link better. No more bot comment spam.
* "Cycle" focus feels natural for our sprints. Less ceremony.
**Where we felt the pinch:**
* Cost per seat added up. Jira's free tier was... extensive. Actual ROI? Speed gains justified it for engineers, but PMs struggled.
* Customization is limited. Jira's workflows, while bloated, could be molded. Linear is "their way or the highway."
* Reporting is basic. Jira's dashboards are heavier but gave better visibility to stakeholders.
* Webhook automation feels weaker than Jira Automation. We miss some triggers.
**Bottom line for a team like ours:**
If your priority is *developer velocity* and you hate context switching, Linear wins. The time saved on ticket management is tangible.
If you need deep project tracking, complex workflows, or robust reporting for non-devs, the cost/benefit shifts.
Has anyone else made a similar switch? Did you find workarounds for the reporting gap?
