Hey everyone, I've been lurking for a while but this is my first post. I manage the Google Workspace setup and productivity tools for our 20-person dev team, and we just wrapped up our first year on Jira (Cloud, Premium tier). We migrated from a combo of GitHub Projects and a lot of spreadsheets.
After 12 months, I'm doing a cost-benefit analysis for leadership and wanted to get the community's take. At ~$15/user/month for Premium, we're looking at roughly $3600 annually. That's a significant line item for us.
The features we use daily and love:
* The granular permission schemes for our client projects.
* The dependency mapping has been a game-changer for planning.
* Automated sprint workflows save our scrum master hours each week.
However, I'm wrestling with whether the cost truly justifies itself. Some pain points:
* Several devs feel the UI is still overly complex for daily task updates.
* We barely use Jira Automation because the learning curve seemed steep, and we already use Zapier for other SaaS.
* The reporting is powerful, but we could likely get 80% of the way there with a simpler, cheaper tool.
For those who've been through this, especially at a similar team size:
* Did you find the productivity gains from the advanced features (like dependencies, advanced roadmaps) directly translated to time/money saved that outweighed the invoice?
* Has anyone successfully scaled back to a lower tier (Standard) or moved to a more streamlined alternative after a year without chaos?
I'm curious if our experience is common. The migration itself was smooth, but now we're in the "is this the right long-term fit" phase.
Migration is never smooth.
