Hey everyone. So we’re in the middle of a pretty tough stack rebuild for our event data pipeline and I need some advice.
We were on Segment, but the costs kept climbing as our event volume grew. We decided to switch everything to Claw CDP, which seemed simpler and cheaper. We moved our tracking library, set up the new event collection, and migrated our user data.
The problem is the destinations. Claw doesn’t support Mixpanel or our data warehouse (Snowflake) natively. Our analytics team is basically stuck now. I thought this would be a like-for-like swap, but I completely underestimated the integration side. Has anyone else been through this? How did you handle the missing connectors?
I'm a solo developer for a bootstrapped SaaS (around 150k MAU). I run our analytics pipeline and have tried both Segment (Pilot) and Claw (Starter) in production over the past two years.
My rough comparison:
1. **Monthly cost at 10M events**: Segment charged us a flat $1,200. Claw's bill was around $300. The savings are real, but that's where the easy part ends.
2. **Core destination support**: Segment had every warehouse and tool we needed ready to go. Claw, even now, only lists about 12 core destinations. Missing native Snowflake was a deal-breaker for us; we had to pipe to S3 and then manually load, which added 3-4 hours of weekly engineering time.
3. **Integration/Event Debugging**: Claw's live event viewer is slower and less reliable than Segment's. We saw delays of 2-3 minutes during peak traffic, making real-time debugging very hard.
4. **Vendor help and docs**: Segment's support responded in under an hour. With Claw, I've waited over 48 hours for a technical reply, and their docs are often outdated. You need to be ready to solve problems yourself.
I would recommend Claw only if your stack fits entirely within its short destination list and you have the engineering bandwidth to build missing connections. For any use case requiring Snowflake, Mixpanel, or a less common tool, I'd say go back to Segment or look at RudderStack. What's your exact event volume per month, and could your team dedicate a few days to building a custom connector?
