I’ve been a Moz Pro user for a couple years, mainly for agency reporting and basic site audits. With the recent changes and the push towards their free Webmaster Tools, I decided to run a parallel test with Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (the free tier) for a month on a few client sites.
The switch wasn’t seamless. Ahrefs is powerful, but coming from Moz, some expected features just aren't there or work differently.
My immediate gaps:
* **Historical rank tracking data:** Moz Pro keeps a visible history for tracked keywords. In Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, I can see current positions and some weekly movement, but I can't easily pull a report showing where we ranked 3 or 6 months ago. This is a big loss for client reporting to show progress.
* **Crawl issue prioritization & grouping:** Moz's Site Crawl lists issues by severity and groups them (e.g., all 404s together). Ahrefs gives me a raw list of errors, but the onus feels more on me to filter and sort. The "importance" ranking isn't as immediately clear.
* **Page optimization suggestions:** Moz Pro's "Page Optimization" feature gave specific, on-page recommendations for a target keyword. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools shows keyword data and top-ranking pages, but the direct "here's what to fix on this page" advice seems missing.
On the flip side, Ahrefs' index size feels larger, especially for international queries, and the backlink data is in another league.
Has anyone else made this switch?
* How do you handle the lack of historical rank tracking in the free tier? Is this a paid Ahrefs (SEO Toolkit) necessity?
* For those using the paid version, does the workflow for audit prioritization get better?
* Overall, for a small team doing basic audits and monthly reporting, is the jump to a paid Ahrefs plan the only way to cover these Moz-like features?
