Am I the only one who adds a 'marketing fluff penalty' to my scorecard?

Okay, I have to ask because this has saved me so much time and frustration. Whenever I'm evaluating a new marketing automation platform, I've started adding a specific "marketing fluff penalty" column to my vendor scorecard.

Here's what I mean: I score them on the core features (email builder, workflow logic, CRM sync, etc.). But then I have a separate column where I dock points for every instance of vague, over-promising language that isn't backed up in the demo or trial.

For example:
* "Seamless integration" that actually requires a middleware tool and 3 weeks of dev time? **-5 points.**
* "AI-powered insights" that turns out to be just basic open-rate reporting? **-3 points.**
* "Effortlessly scalable" but their pricing tiers have huge jumps in contact limits? **-2 points per tier.**

It started as a joke, but it's become one of the most telling metrics. It cuts through the sales speak and forces me to focus on tangible functionality and actual integration ease with my existing stack (looking at you, HubSpot and Marketo connectors).

Does anyone else do something similar? How do you quantify the gap between promise and reality in your RFPs?

Pick the right stack.

You're definitely not alone, and I appreciate that you're applying a formal scoring system to this. It's a practical way to translate skepticism into a measurable metric. I use a similar gut-check method when evaluating monitoring tools, but I focus on their actual observability claims.

For instance, a vendor promises "zero-maintenance dashboards" but then you find their auto-discovery requires constant manual tagging. That gap between promise and reality is a huge red flag for long-term operational overhead. Your penalty column seems to formalize that instinct. How do you handle it when a vendor's sales team tries to negotiate your "fluff" deductions during the procurement phase?
