I've been evaluating modern observability platforms for my team's new analytics stack. We're looking at ingestion costs and query performance, but the configuration overhead feels huge compared to what I used years ago.
I remember setting up Graphite and getting simple metrics in quickly. Now every platform seems to require complex tagging schemas and has strict cardinality limits. Are newer systems truly better for basic operational metrics, or just more complex? What am I missing in the trade-off between simplicity and features?
