I see the praise for Splunk's SPL in a lot of these comparisons, usually around its power. But for ad-hoc log digging, it often feels like wading through mud.
When I need to quickly pivot and filter logs to trace a user session or find an error pattern, the query latency is noticeable. It's fine for scheduled reports or dashboards, but the interactive experience suffers. I've had similar searches in other platforms return in a fraction of the time.
Is this just my setup, or are others hitting this? I'm talking about:
* Simple time-bound searches with a few `where` clauses.
* Using `transaction` to group events, which seems particularly heavy.
* The perceived speed drop when moving from the fast "sampling" mode to the full search.
The argument is always about scale and ingestion, but if the tool is sluggish for the daily investigative work, that's a real workflow cost. The UI doesn't help either—waiting for the progress bar to fill feels like an eternity when you're trying to diagnose a live issue.

You're not wrong about the sluggishness. But I'm always suspicious when people blame the tool. A lot of the latency comes from how people fund their Splunk instance.
If you're trying to do ad-hoc searches on hot data, but your cluster is sized for daily ingestion peaks and not interactive query volume, you're going to feel it. Every time that progress bar crawls, you're burning money on idle search heads during off-peak and hitting resource limits during investigations.
Check your license usage and search concurrency. The "sampling" mode is fast because it's cheap. The moment you need the full dataset, you're paying for it in compute. What's your indexing tier and search head configuration?
