Just built a Slack bot that alerts us to payroll processing status changes.

I’ve been trying to get more proactive visibility into our payroll runs. We use Gusto, and while it’s mostly reliable, I wanted something to notify our #payroll Slack channel automatically when a status changes from “Processing” to “Completed” or if there’s an error.

I ended up building a simple bot using their API and a few webhooks. It’s working, but it feels a bit fragile.

For those who’ve done something similar: is it better to rely on the vendor’s native alerts, or build a custom monitor? I’m especially curious about compliance—if the bot missed an alert and a payroll was delayed, would we still be on the hook with the vendor? I’m trying to decide if this is worth maintaining or if I should push Gusto for better built-in notifications.
