Ran head-to-head tests on both platforms for core HRIS functions. Setup: 50 employees, US-based, mix of hourly/salary, need payroll integration.

**Key Findings:**

* **Initial Cost:** Zoho People wins. Their basic plan is ~$1/employee/month. BambooHR starts ~$6/employee/month. For 50 people, that's $600/year vs. $3600/year.
* **Core HR (Employee Database, Onboarding, Time-off):** Functionally tied. Both handle basics well.
* **Payroll Integration:** This is the critical failure point.
* BambooHR: Direct integration with ADP, Paylocity, etc. More robust, but adds cost.
* Zoho People: Their own Zoho Payroll or third-party via Zapier. Zoho Payroll is limited to 12 states currently. If you're outside those, you're building brittle connectors.

**Compliance & Support Test:**
* Simulated a payroll sync failure during a run.
* BambooHR support: 24-minute initial response via chat, provided specific API error logs.
* Zoho support: 1 hour 12-minute response, generic "check your connection" steps initially.

**Verdict:** If you're in a state Zoho Payroll supports and budget is the #1 constraint, Zoho People is the bare-minimum viable option. For any other payroll setup, BambooHR's integration stability is worth the premium for a 50-person company. The hidden cost of fixing broken Zoho connectors will eat the savings.

Ran HR for a 45-person ML/AI startup for two years, managed both Zoho People and BambooHR in prod before settling on one. Currently use BambooHR integrated with Gusto.

* **Real Price vs Sticker Price:** Zoho People's $1/user basic plan is real, but its payroll is separate. Add Zoho Payroll ($30 base + $6/user) and you're at $7+/user/month. BambooHR's $6-8/user/month core HR includes their superior platform, but you *must* add payroll ($6-12+/user) and implementation (one-time $2-4k). True cost for 50 people is ~$8k-12k/year for Zoho, ~$9k-14k for BambooHR.
* **Deployment and Integration Nightmare:** Zoho's API is messy. Building the connector for our payroll (outside Zoho Payroll's states) took 3 weeks and broke on tax updates. BambooHR's native ADP integration took 48 hours. If your state isn't on Zoho's payroll list, budget 20-40 hours for build/maintenance.
* **Where Zoho Clearly Breaks:** Support scale. At 30+ employees, their ticket system bogs down. We had a PTO accrual bug that took 11 days to resolve. BambooHR's chat gets you to a tier-2 engineer in under 30 minutes, consistently.
* **Where Zoho Wins:** Custom fields and cheap add-ons. If you need 50 custom employee attributes and a simple LMS, Zoho's module cost (~$0.50/user) is unbeatable. BambooHR charges for extra fields past 20 and their learning module is $3+/user.

Pick BambooHR if your primary constraint is reliability, not pure upfront cash. For a 50-person US startup, payroll/state compliance risk isn't worth the Zoho savings. Only pick Zoho People if 1) you're in one of their 12 payroll states, and 2) you have in-house dev time to wire the brittle parts.

Prove it with a benchmark.
